A render job is only as good as the wall underneath it. If the surface is dusty, loose, cracked or carrying moisture problems, the render will show it sooner or later. That is why knowing how to prepare walls for rendering matters just as much as the finish coat itself.

For homeowners, the main issue is usually not choosing a colour or texture. It is making sure the wall is sound enough to take the system being applied. On older homes especially, preparation is where experienced trades make the difference between a finish that lasts and one that starts failing around joints, drummy patches or existing cracks.

Why wall preparation matters before rendering

Rendering is not just a cosmetic coating. It becomes part of the wall system, and that means the substrate has to be stable, clean and compatible with the product being used. If the background is poorly prepared, the render may not bond correctly, and even a high-quality product will struggle.

This is where many problems start. Paint left on masonry, salt contamination, movement cracks, soft brickwork, loose mortar and hidden moisture can all affect the result. Some walls need only a clean and a primer. Others need repairs, meshing, patching or remedial work before any render goes on.

The right preparation also depends on the wall type. Brick, block, painted masonry, blue board, fibre cement and polystyrene cladding systems all require a different approach. There is no one-size-fits-all method, and that is why proper assessment comes first.

How to prepare walls for rendering step by step

The first step is to inspect the wall properly. That means checking for cracking, hollow areas, loose material, rising damp, water staining, failed paint, algae, salts and previous patch repairs. If the wall is moving or moisture is getting in from elsewhere, applying render over the top will not solve the real problem.

Once the wall has been assessed, any unsound material needs to come off. Loose render, flaking paint, crumbly mortar and weak patches should be removed back to a solid surface. A clean, stable background gives the new render something reliable to adhere to. Skipping this stage is a common reason jobs fail early.

After that, the surface needs a proper clean. Depending on the wall, this may involve pressure cleaning, scrubbing down, mechanical abrasion or a combination of methods. The goal is to remove dust, dirt, grease, salts and anything else that could interfere with adhesion. On some homes near the coast, salt and moisture exposure are a bigger factor than owners realise.

Repairs come next. Cracks are not all the same, and they should not all be treated the same way. A hairline shrinkage crack might need a different approach from a structural movement crack or a recurring joint crack. If there are damaged sections of masonry or old render, those areas should be made good before the full system is applied.

Then the wall is primed or bonded in line with the substrate and the render system being used. This part matters. Some surfaces are too smooth or too porous to accept render without a suitable bonding agent or primer. Others may need mesh reinforcement in stress points, around openings or across repaired sections.

Only when the background is ready should the render application begin.

The main issues that need to be fixed first

Cracking is one of the most obvious problems, but it is not the only one. If a wall has active movement, drummy areas or signs of water entry, preparation has to deal with the cause, not just the symptoms. Rendering over defects without rectification usually means the same issues return through the new finish.

Moisture is a big one. Damp walls can lead to poor adhesion, blistering, staining and premature breakdown. If water is getting in through failed joints, copings, flashings, window surrounds or parapets, those items should be addressed as part of the scope. A neat finish means very little if the substrate is still wet behind it.

Painted surfaces can also be a trap. Some coatings are sound and can be treated with the right preparation system. Others are too weak, too glossy or too unstable and need to be stripped back. This is where experience counts, because the wall may look acceptable at first glance but fail a bond test once work starts.

There is also the issue of compatibility. Cement render, acrylic render and texture coating systems do not all behave the same way. The correct preparation for one system may not be enough for another. Product selection and substrate preparation need to work together.

Different wall types need different preparation

Brick walls are common on Sydney homes, but even standard brickwork can vary. Older brick walls may have soft mortar joints, patchy repairs or years of paint build-up. Newer brickwork may need less remedial work, but it still needs cleaning and assessment for suction, movement and bond.

Block walls can be more porous and may show larger surface irregularities. They often need levelling and careful control of suction before rendering. If the blocks have movement cracks or poor joints, those issues need to be treated first.

Previously rendered walls need a particularly careful inspection. The question is whether the old render is solid enough to remain, or whether it should be removed and reinstated. If it sounds hollow, is cracked through multiple areas or is separating from the substrate, patching alone may not be the right call.

Blue board, fibre cement sheet and lightweight cladding systems require system-specific preparation. Jointing, reinforcement, fixings and compatible base coats all matter. These are not backgrounds to treat casually, especially where long-term cracking resistance is expected.

Polystyrene cladding systems are another category again. They rely on proper installation, meshing, base coating and finishing layers. If the substrate or sheet fixing is wrong, the final coating will not compensate for it.

Why preparation is not a DIY shortcut

A lot of people ask about rendering as if it starts with mixing product and applying it to the wall. In practice, the harder part is diagnosing what the wall needs before that stage. Good preparation is not glamorous, but it is where the job is won or lost.

Trade knowledge matters here because not every crack means the same thing, and not every loose patch should be repaired the same way. The correct approach depends on what is causing the defect, what substrate is underneath, and what finish system is going over the top. A wall that needs remedial work should be treated like a remedial job, not a quick cosmetic upgrade.
